Title: Dark soliton propagation under perturbations
Abstract: Dark solitons of the defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation will be considered. After a short introduction to the main concepts, we will present a direct perturbation method for approximating dark solitons of the NLS equation under the influence of perturbations. It is found that these solitons – under the influence of perturbations-develop a shelf that propagates with speed determined by the background intensity. The dynamical properties of the soliton and the shelf are obtained from integral relations arising from the conservation laws of the NLS equation. To reveal the importance of these shelves, we study the generation and dynamics of dark solitons in various systems, and make possible connections of the perturbed NLS with other important equations that exhibit shelves.
