Την Τετάρτη 27 Αυγούστου και ώρα 13:30 – 14:30 ο προπτυχιακός φοιτητής Δημοσθένης Παυλίδης θα παρουσιάσει την πτυχιακή εργασία με τίτλο “Instantons, Vortices and Confinement” στην αίθουσα σεμιναρίων του Εργαστηρίου Θεωρητικής Φυσικής του ΑΠΘ (4ος όροφος, αίθουσα 23).
Περίληψη: One of the most successful tools in the study of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory has been perturbation theory. As powerful as perturbation theory may be, more often than not, it misses important effects of the underlying theory. One way that has been proven very fruitful in capturing such effects is through the study of semiclassical trajectories in Euclidean time, called instantons. In this talk, we demonstrate the use of instantons by deriving the expression for the energy splitting of a particle in a double-well potential, and discuss their role, as Nielsen-Olesen vortices, in the phenomenon of confinement in the Abelian Higgs model in 1+1 dimensions.
